The Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) is the senior-secondary qualification for most Years 11–12 students in Victoria, set by the VCAA (Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority). It is distinct from the Australian Curriculum, which governs Foundation–Year 10 nationally, and from the VCE Vocational Major (VCE VM) — a parallel, non-ATAR pathway that fully replaced the former VCAL in 2025.

What Is the VCE?
VCE subjects are structured in four units (Units 1–4), typically studied across Years 11 and 12, with each unit assessed through a mix of school-based coursework and, for most Units 3–4 sequences, an external VCAA examination that contributes toward a study score.
Since 2025, the VCE Vocational Major (VCE VM) is fully integrated as VCE's own applied-learning pathway — replacing the former, separately-branded VCAL — for students moving toward apprenticeships, further training, or work rather than an ATAR-based university entry.
Set by VCAA (Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority).
How the VCE Is Structured
Each VCE subject has four units with a set of outcomes assessed through school-based and (for most Unit 3–4 studies) external assessment. Most students complete 16–20 units across Years 11–12 across their chosen subjects.
