National Science Olympiad Pathways

India runs four parallel, subject-specific national Science Olympiad pathways — Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Astronomy — plus a separate Junior Science pathway for younger students. Each follows the same two-stage structure: a National Standard Examination (Stage I), followed by that subject's Indian National Olympiad (Stage II) for qualifiers. These are separate, more selective systems from SOF's school-level Science Olympiad (ISO) — see how they differ below.

The Pathway

Stage 1 · NSE Series

National Standard Examination (Stage I)

Subject-specific screening exams — NSEP (Physics), NSEC (Chemistry), NSEB (Biology) and NSEA (Astronomy) — open to eligible school students.

Conducted by: IAPT (Indian Association of Physics Teachers)

Stage 2 · INxO Series

Indian National Olympiad (Stage II)

Students who qualify the relevant NSE exam appear for that subject's national Olympiad — INPhO, INChO, INBO or INAO. Top performers enter HBCSE's training camps for India's international team in that subject.

Eligibility

Eligibility (typically school students up to Class 12 for the subject-specific tracks, and up to Class 10 for NSEJS, with exact class and age criteria set each cycle) is announced by IAPT/HBCSE ahead of each session. Always confirm current eligibility and dates from the official notification before registering.

How This Differs From SOF Olympiads

These pathways are run by IAPT and HBCSE for the purpose of selecting India's teams for international Science Olympiads (Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Astronomy and Junior Science) — a completely different organizer and purpose from the Science Olympiad Foundation's school-level ISO (formerly NSO). A student's SOF ISO result has no bearing on eligibility for the NSE series, and vice versa.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is SOF ISO the same as NSEP, NSEC, NSEB or NSEA?

No. SOF's ISO is a single school-level Science exam open to Classes 1–12 through participating schools. NSEP/NSEC/NSEB/NSEA are separate, subject-specific national screening exams run by IAPT, each leading toward a distinct international Olympiad team via HBCSE.

Who conducts the NSE exams and the INxO Olympiads?

IAPT (Indian Association of Physics Teachers) conducts the Stage I NSE screening exams; HBCSE conducts the Stage II INxO national Olympiads for qualifiers.

What is NSEJS/INJSO for?

NSEJS (National Standard Examination in Junior Science) and INJSO (Indian National Junior Science Olympiad) form a separate pathway for younger students (up to Class 10), distinct from the subject-specific Physics/Chemistry/Biology/Astronomy tracks.

Can Tutors Parliament help with NSE/INxO preparation?

Yes — a tutor experienced in Olympiad-level Physics, Chemistry, Biology or Astronomy can help with the depth these pathways require, well beyond standard school-level Science tutoring.
