National Mathematical Olympiad Pathway: IOQM → RMO → INMO

India's national Mathematics Olympiad pathway is a three-stage selection process conducted by HBCSE (Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education), starting with IOQM and leading, for top performers, toward India's team at the International Mathematical Olympiad. It is a separate, more selective system from SOF's school-level Mathematics Olympiad — see how they differ below.

The Pathway

Stage 1 · IOQM

Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Mathematics

The entry stage — an objective-cum-short-answer screening test open to eligible school students, replacing the earlier PRMO format.

Conducted by: HBCSE

Stage 2 · RMO

Regional Mathematical Olympiad

Students who qualify IOQM appear for RMO, a subjective, proof-based Mathematics exam conducted region-wise.

Conducted by: Regional coordinators, under HBCSE

Stage 3 · INMO

Indian National Mathematical Olympiad

RMO awardees appear for INMO, the national-level exam. Top performers enter HBCSE's training camps for India's team at the International Mathematical Olympiad.

Conducted by: HBCSE

Eligibility

Eligibility (typically school students up to Class 12, with specific class and age criteria set each cycle) is announced by HBCSE ahead of each session. Always confirm current eligibility and dates from HBCSE's official notification before registering.

How This Differs From SOF Olympiads

This pathway is run by HBCSE for the purpose of selecting India's team for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) — a global competition for pre-college students, unrelated to the Science Olympiad Foundation. Note the naming overlap: SOF also calls its own school-level exam "IMO" (International Mathematics Olympiad, covered on our SOF IMO page), but it is a completely different, unrelated competition from the International Mathematical Olympiad this pathway leads toward. Don't assume a strong SOF IMO result has any bearing on this pathway, or vice versa.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is SOF IMO the same as the International Mathematical Olympiad this pathway leads to?

No. SOF's IMO is a school-level exam open to Classes 1–12 through participating schools, run by the Science Olympiad Foundation. The International Mathematical Olympiad is a separate, much more selective global competition that India's IOQM → RMO → INMO pathway (run by HBCSE) leads toward. The shared acronym is a coincidence, not a connection.

Who conducts IOQM, RMO and INMO?

HBCSE (Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education) conducts IOQM and INMO; RMO is conducted region-wise under HBCSE's coordination.

What happens after INMO?

Top INMO performers are invited to HBCSE's training camps, from which India's team for the International Mathematical Olympiad is eventually selected.

Can Tutors Parliament help with IOQM/RMO/INMO preparation?

Yes — a tutor experienced in Olympiad-level, proof-based Mathematics can help beyond standard school-level tutoring, which this pathway's later stages specifically require.
